Catalogue Note
Up on the Roof Series (Lot 606) takes inspiration from the rooftop houses that seem to cover the elevated skyline of a tightly packed Hong Kong. Three figures positioned at the very pinnacle of three wooden pillars are markedly facing away from each other, generating a sort of tension that characterizes urban living in the city. Their curious facial expressions and the colourful clothes in which they are clad, however, invoke a subtle hint of compassion that manages to linger. While the subject matter is an honest portrayal of reality, Fung Lik Yan intentionally retains the original colour, cut, and grain of the wood, leaving the viewer with an alternate sense of softness and warmth.
