Condition

The colours of the work are fairly accurate in the catalogue illustration, althought they are more vivid in the original. The work is in very good condition. In the upper right-left and lower right corners, some traces of use are visible. From 41cm of the right edge and from 1 cm from the top edge, a minute paint loss is visible (approx. 1mm) upon close inspection. Along the left edge, from 22 cm of the lower edge, a rub mark is visible (approx. 1cm). No trace of retouching appears under UV light. The work is not relined.

Jamie Wyeth et Andy Warhol se rencontrent dans les années 1960 grâce à l'artiste américain Peter Beard (illustration ci-contre) et décident de peindre leurs portraits mutuels : Jamie Wyeth représente Andy Warhol accompagné de son chien Archie et Andy Warhol peint Jamie Wyeth à la manière des Society portraits. Du début des années 1970 jusqu'à sa disparition en 1987, Andy Warhol offrira dans ces portraits de société une grande diversité de visages. " Qu'il s'agisse de Rudolf Noureïev, de Leo Castelli ou de Mick Jagger, ce sont les portraits d'une époque donnée reliés les uns aux autres par leurs couleurs, leurs dimensions et leur facture minutieuse." Si Jamie Wyeth est un sujet difficile à saisir comme le rappelle Andy Warhol, c'est sans doute aussi la beauté du jeune homme qui fascine Andy autant que son histoire familiale. Jamie Wyeth est un peintre illustrant l' « esprit américain », tout comme son père et son grand-père l'avaient fait avant lui depuis la fin du 19ème siècle. Andy Warhol est bien inspiré en représentant le portrait du jeune Jamie Wyeth dans le registre des célébrités de son époque, à côté des portraits qu'il réalise la même année pour le président des Etats-Unis d'Amérique Jimmy Carter ou le chanteur des Rolling Stones Mick Jagger.
