Catalogue Note

Theodoros Stamos taught at the Art Students League in New York for 22 years.  He influenced many artists in his classes, including the owner of this work who met him while studying there.  Stamos's painting career spanned decades, and he rose to prominence when he was the youngest member of the fifteen artists who made up the New York School which also included Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still.  The present work shows him embracing abstraction, a style that absorbed him and one from which he never departed.
