This study was once part of an album sold at Sotheby's in 1964 and subsequently dispersed. The album consisted mainly of decorative and landscape drawings and was attributed at the time to an artist working in the circle of Tassi. However, Patrizia Cavazzini's recent article clarified the old provenance of Leonardo Scaglia and attributed the majority of the sheets in the album to Tassi himself.1 She writes that the remainder are perhaps 'fondi di bottega', and that some pages were once part of different albums, due to the fact that many, including the present sheet, carry a second page number in the corner. Cavazzini dates the drawing to circa 1640, and writes: 'The slightly tremulous flow of the pen on the recto is perhaps due to Tassi's advancing age and problems with gout'.
