Avec une infinie délicatesse, la poignée disparaît dans les formes fluides d'un personnage féminin cariatide. Sculpté au sommet, un masque guli à tête de buffle impose au premier plan l'écho stylisé du visage humain qu'il surplombe. Superbe patine d'usage, brillante sur les parties saillantes, grumeleuse dans les creux. Le maillet est accompagné d'une clochette plate en fer forgé.
Condition
Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. The horns of the small top mask are broken at the summit. The extremities of the feet of the figure are broken-glued. Fine encrusted patina.

Catalogue Note
Selon Etienne Féau (in AFAA, 1989 : 198), les idiophones lawle, lorsqu'ils sont ornés comme ici d'un masque de guli à tête de buffle, servent à accompagner la sortie nocturne de ce masque, considéré comme le fils du dieu céleste Nyamyé et de son épouse Assassiwa.
Il est exceptionnel que la poignée soit sculptée d'un motif figuratif. cf. Vogel (1987 : 152) pour un maillet de gong provenant de la collection Helena Rubinstein, dont la partie supérieure est ornée d'un personnage féminin.
