Description

after George Stubbs, depicting gentlemen shooting, in a contemporary giltwood frame, re-gilded
Condition
The frame is slightly warped. There are some marks and some paint loss to the picture particularly in the area of the sky, the centre of the waterwheel and the running stream. The blue border also has some losses and may have been re-painted. The painted line decoration around the picture has some losses.

Catalogue Note
The present composition is based on an engraving of the first of a series of four paintings by George Stubbs and is entitled `Shooting'. The scene has been identified as Creswell Craggs, on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border. The original series was engraved by William Woollett and published by Thomas Bradford between 1769 and 1772. For more information about Chinese reverse painted mirrors, see footnote to lot 94.
