A George III carved mahogany tripod table circa 1760

the circular moulded tilt-top with a pie-crust edge,  on a turned and twist-carved stem carved with Gothick strapwork, on a ribbon and flower carved base, raised on leaf and scroll-carved cabriole legs, on later castors, with a paper label No..../Property of/ WILLIAM SCOTT CLUETT

Good general condition. The top has been re-finished and has an age crack. The catch is old but has been replaced as there are some filled holes adjacent to it. The stem has some thin age cracks running most of the entire length.

The strapwork or trellis carving on the current table reflects the 'Chinese' taste as promoted by Thomas Chippendale in his Director of 1762 where a similar design appears on the post of a 'Chinese Bed', pl. XLV. Similar carving is also apparent on a tripod table formerly in the collection of Percival Griffiths and illustrated by the renowned furniture historian, R.W. Symonds in English Furniture from Charles II to George II, London, 1929, p. 232, fig. 191.
