A George III mahogany breakfront secretaire library bookcase circa 1770

the leaf-carved cornice above two pairs of astragal doors enclosing adjustable shelves, the cupboard doors to the lower part revealing sliding tray shelves

In good overall condition. Left and right frieze drawers with minor restorations. Right hand cornice return possibly a restoration. Oval handles to frieze drawers possibly replaced but appear to be 18th century gilt-brass examples. Minor age cracks to sides of lower sections. Minor losses to beading on right deep frieze drawer and just beneath the secretaire drawer to the lower left corner. Both deep frieze drawers do not close entirely flush. Right door panel to lower section with characteristic warping (corrected when door locked) and some shrinkage to the panel itself. Minor age cracks to third drawer down on right side. Upper section with some typical age cracks to astragals. Some key damage to doors on upper section which have consequent small areas of restoration surrounding key holes and to corresponding areas on flanking doors where the keys have knocked against them. Some glazing possibly replaced due to inevitable damage. General minor old marks, bruises and scratches consistent with age. Excellent quality of timber with good figuring, patina and colour. Approximately nine panes of glass, mostly the larger panes, appear to have been replaced. It is difficult to be absolutely precise. Three locks have been replaced and there are five keys. Eight shelves from the centre section of the bookcase have been replaced. The hinges appear to be original but all show some evidence of re-fitting. The leather in the secretaire drawer has been recently replaced.
