A George III mahogany serpentine commode circa 1775

inlaid throughout with stringing and with gilt-brass handles

Good overall condition. Handles 18th century but probably not original as the knock marks to the drawers fronts are not consistent with where the handle drops hit them. It is quite possible that the original set were of a plain variety and the intention was to improve the piece by replacing them with a more elaborate and superior design of handle. Slight gaps around the drawers due to charactersistic carcass movement. Small triangular patches to both top rear corners to sides which appear to be restorations, particularly on the right side. Feint age crack to left side of top. The right hand side of the chest has feint vertical age cracks running with the grain and one more noticeable age crack with old discoloured filled restoration which requires retouching to disguise its appearance. Slight scuffing to feet. General typical old marks and scratches. A lovely consistent colour and patina throughout. A fine example of simple restrained design and lightness of proportion lent by the tall splayed feet.
