Catalogue Note

Frank M. Bernardin (1867-1953) was president of the BR Electric Company and a member of the Board of the Kansas City Art Institute.

The pristine condition of the present rug is a testament to the esteem with which it has been held through the years.  Dark blue ground Marasali Shirvan prayer rugs with rows of varying flaming boteh as found here are not uncommon, however, the isolated single foliate motif enclosed by the arch in this rug appears to be unusual.  The use of a stylized beetle or insect border is another characteristic of this rug that sets it apart among the known corpus of Marasali weavings.

Related blue ground Shirvan Marasali prayer rugs that have recently appeared at auction include Sotheby's, New York, 6 June 2007, lot 109; and Grogan & Company, 10 December 2007, lot 38.
