Description

  • A Lavar Kirman carpet
  • approximately 23ft. 4in. by 16ft. 2in. (7.11 by 4.93m.)

Condition

Pile ranges from near original 1/8 of an inch with dark browns oxidized to knotheads and foundation in areas. Areas of foldwear low to knotheads and spot foundation. Areas of wear at either end, low to knotheads, warp ties and foundation, particularly in light blue guard borders. Cut and reduced in length and width and probably missing a guard border. Field was overtinted with a terra cotta that has now faded in areas giving the ground a mottled effect and in some of the deep rose reds and medallions as well. Tinting probably done in the 1920's when this was in fashion. Ends fraying with losses to outer guard stripes, recommend securing. Original selvages fraying in areas, recommend stablizing. Supple handle, handsome design and scale, highly lustrous wool.

Catalogue Note

The overall design of lobed medallions enclosed within a border of undulating vinery alternating with rosettes here are executed in colors and on a scale that achieve a sophistication and elegance that may indicate that this carpet is of an earlier vintage than many extant Kirman weavings.
