Description

  • 124.5cm. high, 104cm. wide, 42.5cm. wide; 4ft. 1in., 3ft. 5in., 1ft. 4¾in.
each with a rectangular Belgian slate top, above a door opening to reveal a shelf

Provenance

Sir Charles Henry Tempest, 1st Bt. (1834 - 1894), thence by descent to Ethel Mary Tempest (1869 - 1937) who married Miles Stapleton, 10th Lord Beaumont (1850 - 1895) thence by descent.

Condition

One door with a late 19th century small printed paper label for A. Joseph - Imported Works of Art, 27 New Bond Street. There are some medium sized chips to the slate tops which can be restored and some water marks and scratches consistent with age and use.The mounts have lost their gilding and will need to be cleaned and re-gilded. The brass stringing is in a similar condition. There are some losses to the hardstone on both cabinets as visible from catalogue photograph, which will need to be replaced. One has significant verdi gris to the mounts on the left hand side. The mask will need ot be re-pinned. One foliate mount is missing from top left side above the same mask and the ribbon mount from the front of the door above the central medallion is missing. The escutcheon mount from the other is missing. Both cabinets are dirty and could benefit from cleaning. There are scratches and age cracks consistent with age. Both will need repairs to rear legs as these are either detached or badly damaged. They will be an impressive pair of cabinets once restored.
