STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in relatively good condition. There is one vertical crack, with assosiated minor areas of paint loss, running the length of the picture, on the right hand side, where the canvas has at one time been folded. There is some minor retouching to this fold line, and there are areas in the darker tones of the painting, where minor ditumen seperatin has occured, enhancing th ecraquelure in places. There is also a thick layer of discoloured varnish and dirt overall, which obscures much of the finer detail of the painting. This is however surface residue and could be removed by sensitive cleaning and conservation. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light FRAME Held in a gilded wooden frame.
