Literature

Catalogue of All the Furniture and Effects in Carlton Hall, Selby, 1854, p.109, listed in the 'First floor East side of the Wing. The first Breakfast Room' and described as:
2 ebony chests of Drawers 3ft. 3in & brass mouldings and shaped pilasters to the corners & inlaid with brass six drawers in do [sic] made in the form of 2 pedestals with 2 drawers each and brass handles of Louis Quartz style'.

Condition

In `country house' condition. Commode 1: A section of brass inlay is missing from the top flanking central paterae, easily restorable. Brass and bronze mounts could benefit from cleaning. Minor chips and losses to veneer throughout. Sections of brassbanding off but present and some sections missing but which can be replaced easily. The aprons have been strengthen at the back. The mounts have been lacked. One handle off but present. Some age cracks to the right hand side which will need attention. Brass lifting in places. Commode 2: In a similar condition to commode 1. There is a section of the gilt bronze mount to the left side missing. Minor age cracks throughout. The mounts are dirty and could benefit from cleaning. Gilding worn throughout. One back leg loose.
