Roman naturaliste à l'extrême, En Ménage attira sur son auteur les foudres des critiques et les éloges de Zola. Huÿsmans écrira en 1885, dans Les Hommes d'aujourd'hui, sous le pseudonyme de A. Meunier, à propos de son oeuvre qu'il préfère En Ménage « à tous les ouvrages que nous devons à cet auteur car c'est le chant du nihilisme, un chant encore assombri par des éclats de beauté sinistre, et par des mots d'un esprit féroce ».
