Catalogue Note
Cette étude, unique en son genre, fut commanditée par le surintendant aux Affaires Indiennes, Thomas L. McKenney, en poste sous quatre présidents successifs (de 1816 à 1822 puis de 1824 à 1830), lorsqu'il prit conscience que les tribus indiennes et leur culture étaient en voie d'extinction. Il fit alors exécuter par Charles Bird King les portraits des principaux chefs de tribus, publiés dans une première édition in-folio en 1838, chez Frederick W. Greenough. La présente édition grand
in-octavo est enrichie de scènes de la vie des Indiens d'après les peintures de James Otto Lewis. Toutes les œuvres originales furent détruites lors de l'incendie du Smithsonian Institute en 1865.
