Description

au centre le Bouddha assis en position de méditation sur une base lotiforme, figuré effectuant trois mudras, représentations du passé, présent et futur, au dessus de l'assemblée des 18 luohans et des gardiens des quatres directions dans des tourbillons nuageux, sous le soleil et la lune avec au centre un coq et un lièvre respectivement et huit apsaras en vol apportant des présents, avec au sommet l'inscription Wuliang shou zun fo, "Bouddha vénéré à la longévité sans limite'  le pourtour encadré à décor de rinceaux de lotus

Compare with other examples of identical pattern from important public collections, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession no. T.230-1965 , the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, accession no. CBS 114 , and the Musée Historique des Tissus, Lyon, accession no. 28590. Another hanging of this type was sold in Christie's Hong Kong, 27 april 1997, lot 42.

A hanging of larger size, but with a similar border pattern depicting the Pure Land of the Western Paradise, is illustrated by Shun Jiajin, Treasures of the Forbidden City, Hong Kong, 1987, no.97, where it is recorded that the textile was based on a painting by the Qianlong-period artist Ding Guanpeng, was originally housed in the Palace of Heavenly Purity and was part of the Court collection of treasures. Another textile depicting this subject was included in the exhibition La Cité interdite, Musée du Petit Palais, Paris, 199--97, illustrated in the catalogue, no 50
