Catalogue Note
A similar cabinet from the Charles Vignier collection is illustrated in Odilon Roche, Les meubles de la Chine, Paris, Librairie des arts décoratifs, pl. IV.
The flower decoration can be compared to the design found on early Ming blue and white porcelains. The construction in separate panels divided by ornated strips can be compared to the structure found on early Ming furnitures of a recessed panel framed by stretchers in relief. These are here maintained for ornemental purpose but without a structural role. The stretchers will progressively disappear from the design during the 17th century to move behind the decorated panels inside the cabinets.
