Catalogue Note

The imagery on this bottle is highly auspicious. The construction of the rebus is formed by the monkey (hou) on a sack (dai) with a wasp (feng), which produce the phrase dai fenghou, 'May generations of your family be ennobled as marquises'.
Compare with two other nephrite bottles from the J & J Collection carved with the same subject-matter, illustrated by Moss et. al., The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle, New York, 1993, nos. 16 and 17; another in R. Holden, Rivers and Mountains Far From the World, no.64, p. 154.
A white and russet bottle also with the same subject, from the J & J collection, was sold at Christie's New York, 29 March 2006, lot 8.
