Catalogue Note
In the shape of a pillar, these cylindrical bottles are inspired by a common practice at the Court and in other Imperial Palaces for formal occasions when columns were wrapped in dragon-rugs. The painting of the dragon is powerful. Moss, Graham and Tsang state they are among the masterpieces of underglaze blue-decorated snuff bottles. For other examples, see A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles. The Mary and George Bloch Collection, vol.6, Arts of the Fire, Part 2, no.1186; see also The Au Hang Collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles, p. 198, no. 268. A similar bottle was sold at Christie's New York, 19 September 2007, lot 634.
