Catalogue Note

The nine fish (Jiuyu) motif is highly auspicious and the number nine can be associated to the emperor as well as the number five. On the present bottle, there are a group of five goldfish on one side and nine in total. The exquisite painting and high quality of the mark show the imperial kilns provenance.

An identical bottle is illustrated in Moss, Graham, Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles. The Mary and George Bloch Collection, vol.6 part.2, Porcelain, no. 1304.
