Catalogue Note
Dongfang Suo, a courtier of the Emperor of the Han Dynasty Wudi stole three of the peaches of the Queen Mother of the West's tree, Xi Wang Mu. For another similar example of a cup with Dongfang Suo as well as further details on his story see Jan Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn carving in China, London 1999, no.265 p.195.
The nice honey colour of the horn may suggest that the horn comes from a Java rhinoceros.
