Catalogue Note

A popular landmark for both western and chinese artists since the 1780's, the Dutch Folly Fort was built on Haizhu (Pearl of the Sea) Island, a smooth oval sandbar on the Pearl River about 800 meters from the original permises of the foreign "Factories". An old temple has been built as a memorial to Li Maoying, a distinguished mandarin of the Song dynasty (960-1279). It was absorbed into the city during the reclamation in  1931.
