Catalogue Note

This is one of a group of well hollowed, plain jade bottles which were introduced in the 18th century. The purity of the material, the thinness of the body and its good translucency are enhanced by the simple fullness of its shape and the lack of surface decoration.
Another white jade bottle with a slightly different shape was sold at Christie's New York, 30 March 2005, lot 16 ; compare also with white jade snuff bottles illustrated in Snuff Bottles in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, The National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1991, no. 193 and 204
These flawless white jade and very well hollowed bottles with recessed foot are discussed in Moss, Graham, Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle, The J & J Collection, vol. 1, p.111, no.52 where a similar bottle is illustrated.
