A Khorassan Carpet, Northeast Persia

Pile fair to low, down to knot bar in areas, within borders and main field. Overall low piling and tinting thoughout. The lower quarter of the carpet has deeper pile, the area above the hills in the narrative, and the architecture and animals, has lower pile overall. Stars in sky, the sun and moon in the top section have areas showing the knot-bars, the surrounding blue ground has areas of tinting. Re-overcast sides, original trimmed cotton fringe, both ends overlocked. Maroon coloured areas overall with evidence in sections of the area of this colour oxidised down to the knot-bars, especially in the narrow inner (more extensive) and outer borders (not as much of knot-bars showing). Oxidisation has affected the central ground colours of the green and blue in the central section of the main field. Certain colours affected by oxidisation in particular to the picture details, for example the areas where the reds of the sails, the animals and the trees have thick paint added to the oxidised areas – now maroon (red on reverse), this affects areas of the oranges in the trees. One of the donkeys far right is now lilac, due to surface tinting. Design overall is charming.
