Made in 1911, this gold embroidery was a gift to Mr Charles R. Crane, the philanthropical American Arabist who helped finance the first explorations for oil in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, from Gafa'ar Wali Pasha, whose family who for generations made both the sacred carpet used in Mecca and also the red cover for the sacred tomb in Medina. The inscription includes the name of both the giver and Mr Crane, with the customary salutations and honorifics.
