Catalogue Note
This carefully decorated ewer is not only inspired by the style of Iznik pottery, but also draws directly from 16th and 17th century designs. On one side of the body, a woman dressed in a turquoise tunic is shown holding a red tulip with her left hand. This image is almost an exact copy of the same figure found on a plate dated circa 1570, now in the Musée de la Renaissance - Château d'Écouen, DS 2145 (Hitzel and Jacotin 2005, p.295). Similarly, the image of a palace found on the reverse faithfully resembles a much earlier depiction found on a dish dated circa 1650-1675, now in the Sadberk Hanim Museum, Inv.no.9819-P.454 (Hülya Bilgi (ed.), Reunited after centuries, 2005, no.35, pp.90-1).
