Catalogue Note
These types of chain mail coats and knee-guards were made in Bijapur as part of a collection which entered the armoury at Bikaner, the capital of the Adilshahi dynasty, when the Maharajah Anup Singh defeated the 'Adilshahi dynasty at the siege of Adoni in 1689. The same style of armours were used by Mamluks, Ottomans and Aqqoyunlu but differ slightly.
A similar coat is housed in the Khalili Collection (Alexander 1992, p.160, no.100). A comparable Mamluk chain-mail knee-guard was sold in these rooms, 8 October 2008, lot 231.
