inscriptions
In the palm:

'Ya Allah, Ya Husayn'

The 'alam or standard was an iconic symbol of Shi'a Islam and came in several forms.  The present examples however, are in the shape of the protective hand of Fatima, the Prophet Muhammad's daughter and mother of the great Shi'ite martyr Husayn.  Each of the five fingers represent the ahl al-bayt or 'five persons of the household': Muhammad, Fatima, Ali, Husayn and Hassan respectively, who today are the object of devotion for many Shi'ite Muslims, in memory of Husayn's martyrdom at Karbala.
