Catalogue Note

From 1957-1988, Vickrey created over 70 covers for Time Magazine.  The present lot was a commission made by the artist for the cover of the magazine's April 7, 1967 issue.  The topic of the week was oral contraception or "The Pill" and the article was entitled "Freedom from Fear".  The subject was a highly controversial one at the time and Vickrey's image was deemed too risque, so the magazine decided on a less graphic one.
