Catalogue Note

Edward Hopper's studio on the top floor of his building at 3 Washington Square afforded him views over the buildings of New York City, and in 1926, he started working on a handful of works in watercolor and crayon of the city's rooftops. He later worked up the present drawing, Skylights, into the 1928 watercolor My Roof in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. Hopper's series of rooftop views ultimately culminated in the oil painting City Roofs of 1932 (Private collection).
