Catalogue Note
A fine and powerful Fang Mvai figure, Ntem Valley, Gabon
This impressive ancestor figure belongs to the style of the Fang Mvai of the Ntem Valley (Southern Fang), as can be seen in the pronounced muscular masses, the three part coiffure which falls at a diagonal to the nape of the neck, the coffee-bean eyes, and the torso which flares outwards at the level of the navel.
According to Louis Perrois (in de Grunne, 2001: 121), the small number of figures attributed to the Mvai of the Ntem Valley can be said to define the 'quintessence of the Fang "manner", the outcome of a tradition and creative universe which dates back to the earliest generations'. The present work is distinguished by the plastic solutions which the carver has used to amplify the power of the ancestor. The dynamism of the figure is particularly clear in the contrast between the continuous cylindrical volume and vertical movement of the profile, and the tight curves of the head and hair.
Cf. Meauzé (1967: 197) for a byeri of comparable style, formerly in the collection of Pierre Guerre and now in the Musee des Arts Africains, Oceaniens, Amerindiens de Marseille (inv. 988-001-006).
The superb oily patina indicates the figure's prolonged ritual use.
