La profonde érosion du bois dur offre à la lecture un parcours sinueux, accentuant le caractère éthéré de l'œuvre : portée par une base évasée, le cou s'étire avec souplesse jusqu'à la tête Janus, les visages signifiés par les cercles percés des yeux et de la bouche. L'intensité de l'expression est accentuée par les petits trous encerclant les yeux, servant probablement à y fixer des ornements.

Catalogue Note
Selon Hélène Leloup (2000 : 66), ce rare pilon à tête Janus, "au vu de son usure, a été probablement utilisé pour appeler un esprit, scander un rythme avec les deux mains ; sa grande ancienneté montre le soin avec lequel il a été préservé". cf. Colleyn (2002 : 138) et Ezra (1986 : 21 et 22) pour deux bâtons anthropomorphes de conception formelle comparables mais dotés de charges rituelles, intervenant chez les Bamana dans le cadre de la société initiatique du Jo.
