malagan, le personnage central fermement tenu entre les serres et le bec de l'oiseau toucan qui le domine, les ailes largement déployées. Très belle qualité de la sculpture et du décor d'entrelacs et de chevrons, rehaussé de pigments noirs, rouges et jaunes.
Le personnage tient dans chaque main un motif circulaire appelé "les yeux du soleil", orné d'un opercule de coquillage. Au dos, une ancienne étiquette porte la mention manuscrite : "Malagan (...) Bandares (...) west küste New-Ireland (Neu Mecklenburg) Bismark - Archipel".

Condition
Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. The human figure has been broken-glued. Few thin stabilized cracks and small losses in the superstructure. Very beautiful freshness of the polychromy.

Catalogue Note
Les frises horizontales malagan, généralement peintes sur les deux faces, étaient exposées au sommet d'un mât sur les parois du principal abri d'exposition, lors des cérémonies funéraires malagan. Une frise comparable, montrant un personnage sur un croissant de lune et provenant de la côte sud ouest de la Nouvelle-Irlande, fut photographiée par Alfred Bühler en 1931 (Gunn, 1997 : fig.110).
