Entre 1955 et 1956, Robert Frank parcourt les Etats-Unis grâce à une bourse de la fondation Guggenheim et réalise plus de 28 000 clichés dont il ne conservera qu'une partie. Ne trouvant pas d'éditeur aux Etats-Unis, c'est Robert Delpire qui acceptera de le publier, à Paris, en 1958. Pour illustrer ces photographies, Alain Bosquet a réuni des textes de Caldwell, Dos Passos, Faulkner, Miller, Steinbeck...
