Il existe une variante intéressante de ce portrait d'Emmanuel d'Astier dans laquelle Man Ray superpose l'image offerte ici, inversée, et la fameuse "Tête" de 1920 (voir Emmanuelle de l'Ecotais et Alain Sayag, Man Ray, La Photographie à l'envers, Paris, Centre Georges Pompidou / Le Seuil, 1998, ill. p. 206) - voir photographie ci-dessous à gauche. L'image ainsi obtenue montre un "triple portrait" et un graphisme composé par le jeu d'ombres et la forme des visages (voir catalogue de vente Photographies, Coutau-Bégarie, 21 novembre 1997, lot 58) - voir photographie ci-dessous à droite.
