Le photographe George Hoyningen-Huene est surtout connu pour ses élégantes photographies de mode des années 1920 à 40, faites à Paris pour Vogue et Harper's Bazaar. Ces images célèbrent la beauté selon l'idéal classique antique et le culte des corps bronzés en vogue à cette époque et sont influencées par les photographies d'Edward Steichen, l'art cubiste et le cinéma. Moins connues sont ses photographies de voyage, prises en 1936 et 1938 en Afrique, en Grèce, en Asie et en Australie. Les images de son voyage en Afrique furent publiées en 1938 sous le titre African Mirage. The record of a Journey´, montre le même classicisme stylistique typique de ses photographies de mode effectuées en studio.
