in Queen Anne style, the notched rim with caryatid heads and scrolls above classical foliage, the fluted body centered by embossed cartouches of strapwork and fish scale enclosing an armorial and a commemorative inscription, the sides with bail handles issuing from lion masks

Catalogue Note
The inscriptions read: "In commemoration of the Incorporation of the Mercers Company 13 January 1394." The base rim of one bowl is also engraved "Presented by the Mercer's Company 13 Jan 1894."
Dating back to the fourteenth century, the Mercer's Company is one of London's oldest livery companies. Although its original purpose was to act as trade association for the merchants of fine fabrics, the Company exists today as a charitable organization providing assistance to various schools, and housing for the elderly.
