CRUCHLEY, MAP-SELLER & GLOBE MAKER / 81 FLEET STREET, LONDON. Restorations, the stands lacking compasses, repaired breaks to legs.

The celestial globe in fair condition with repaired cracks around the hour ring to the north pole and minor repaired cracks to the pin at the south pole, which is lacking the hour ring; the interior lead counter-weight damaged; discoloration and abraisions to varnish with brown spotting throughout and with numerous areas of dirt, grime and foxing to the surface. The terrestrial globe in fair restored condition; old restoration including inpainting around the north west coast of South America continuing north through Central America into southern Mexico, the restoration continues west into the Pacific Ocean along the equator until the Marshall Islands and with an abrasion, short cracks to the hour ring at the north pole and restored cracks with inpainting around the hour ring at Antarctica; discoloration and abraisions to varnish with brown spotting throughout and with numerous areas of dirt, grime and foxing to the surface. The stand to the celestial globe in fair restored condition, the horizon ring with stains, foxing, discoloration, wear and small losses to the edges and with chips losses and wear around the slots for the meridian ring; three old repaired diagonal breaks to the horizon ring with inpainting and infilling to the top and underside; the underside with two screw holes; old repaired breaks to top of turned stem including the base of two quarter supports; base of stem with old repaired breaks at joins with slight irregularity to the molded edge to the stem above the legs; the underside of the base with a later tripartite metal brace; repaired break to one leg at motch for stretcher and now with a batten to the underside with inpainting an infilling; stretchers and compass lacking; overall with old marks, scratches, scuffs and bruises. The stand to the terrestrial globe in fair restored condition, the horizon ring with stains, foxing, discoloration, wear and small losses to the edges and with chips losses and wear around the slots for the meridian ring; old repaired break at join of two ring quarters and with join of one quarter support now with infilling and inpainting to the underside; the underside with two screw holes; one quarter support with infilled and inpainted old repaired breaks; lacking screw to metal base for meridian ring; old repaired breaks through the base of the stem with subsequent infilling to the underside and with losses and slight irregularity to the molded edge to the stem above the legs; one leg with an old infilled repaired break above notch for stretcher; stretchers and compass lacking; overall with old marks, scratches, scuffs and bruises.

In the mid 19^th century, G. F. Cruchley acquired the plates of the firm founded by John Cary (c. 1745-1835), with his brother William.  One of the foremost London map and globe sellers of the late 18^th and early 19^th centuries, they were succeeded by George and John Cary in the Regency period.  George Frederick Cruchley, 81 Fleet Street, fl. 1823-1876, was a map seller and globe maker who continued to produce globes under the Cary name.
