A Regency maple and marble top bookcase in the manner of George Bullock circa 1815

with Mona marble or Connemara marble top.

Overall good condition; the marble top with very minor chip and wear to the edges; the left side with loss to two molded sides to the square panel above the back left scrolled pilaster; loss to the beading of the left side scroll approximately 4 ½ inches in length; loss to the left side molding of the square panel above the inside left scrolled pilaster; repaired chip to top molded edge; ink stains and marks to the shelves; overall with old marks, scratches, scuffs and bruises consistent with age and use.

A design for a pedestal desk by George Bullock in the Wilkinson Tracings, Birmingham City Art Gallery (Mss. p. 98), features foliate elements that relate to the applied elements on the frieze of the present bookcase.  Additionally, Bullock employed native woods in his furniture, in this case, maple, reflecting not only the austerity of the period, but also the sense of patriotism engendered by the Napoleonic wars.  The marble top is possibly from Bullock's own Mona Marble mine in Anglesey, again, probably partly due to the commercial constraints of the Napoleonic war.
