A Regency brass-inlaid and -mounted ebony and ebonized table in the manner of George Bullock Circa 1815

The underside of one side rail and underside of cross bar to trestle support each stamped with an X, the other side rail and cross bar to the trestle support each stamped with a triangle.  Restored, repaired breaks.

Overall good restored condition; the top with age cracks and minor stress tears to the center; one corner of stringing with slight lifting; the gilt-metal mounted molded edge with wear to the gilding and with small dents and tarnishing; one lyre-form trestle with old repaired breaks to the top and bottom of each S scroll support; the tops of the S scrolls each with a plug; old loss to veneer to corner of front block of foot; underside of one block foot with a replaced corner; the other trestle with old repaired breaks to the tops and one bottom of the S-scroll supports; the tops each with plugs; underside of one block foot appears to be spliced; undersides of each trestle foot with two screw holes; overall with small chips to the ebonized veneer and with scratches.

Decorative elements found on the present table were used by the Regency cabinet-maker George Bullock: ebony inlay and veneers, brass inlay (including 'Buhl' work) and ebonized decoration are found throughout his documented work.  Following his trip to Paris in 1814 (where he met the artist Jacques-Louis David), Bullock started to employ 'Buhl' marquetry in his furniture and the present table has both 'premier-partie' and 'contre-partie' brass marquetry.   Although the lyre-form trestle base appears to be rare in Bullock's oeuvre, a maple center table illustrated in M. Jourdain, Regency Furniture 1795-1830, London: Country Life Ltd., 1965, rev. edn, p. 67, fig. 138, features a related version with addorsed crane neck supports, which appear in the designs of Bullock, known as the Wilkinson Tracings, Birmingham City Art Gallery, p. 201.
