on metal casters. The front of the bottom two bearers of each étagère stamped F and penciled Front.

Overall good restored condition; later screws to the backsplashes of each shelf; some later screws to the underside of brackets; old marks, scratches, scuffs and bruises. The first with an old repaired break to right side finial and with an infilled plug to the right side; minor warpage to shelves; each bracket with a screw to the underside and an empty screw hole some of which are infilled; replacement to scroll tip of front right middle bracket; age crack to left side of bottom shelf; shelves with slight shrinkage with subsequent gaps between the shelves and the brass edges; some old glue to bearers at joins with stiles; scuffs and wear to feet with subsequent losses to the ebonized surface. The other with areas of inpainting to the ebonized molding of the back rail to top; the top shelf with an inpainted age crack to the right side and a small age crack to the left side; the bearer to the underside possibly replaced and with later screws to its underside; the middle shelf with an age crack to the left side and with small stress cracks to the right side at juncture with the right stile; the bottom shelf with an age crack to the right side at juncture with right stile and with small age crack to the left side at juncture with left stile; minor warpage to shelves and with minor shrinkage with small gaps between shelves and brass edges; each bracket with a screw to the underside and an empty screw hole some of which are infilled; some old glue to bearers at joins with stiles; scuffs and wear to feet with subsequent losses to the ebonized surface.

Thomas King's desgn for an  étagère, which is nearly identical to that of the present lot, can be found in Pictoral Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge: Baron Publishing, 1997, p.416.  The design, circa 1835, is one from one of his fifteen furniture pattern books, produced between 1829 and 1839.
