Catalogue Note

Studied in Europe in the 1940s, Wu Guanzhong returned to China after the establishment of the P.R.C. From that time, he has been pursuing a path of nationalizing oil painting, a medium that is deeply rooted in Western culture and history. And in the meantime, in the later part of his career, he has also been dedicating himself to rejuvenating traditional Chinese painting and elevating it on the international art scene. Several works from this auction represent different styles of his art. He fully demonstrates his virtuosity in fusing Chinese ink painting techniques with Western materials and media.  His emphasis on line combined with expressive brushwork culminates in a style that is truly, inimitably Wu Guanzhong's.
