Catalogue Note

The decorative patterns on bronzes from Shang and Zhou period are seemingly complex. In fact, they are assembled from some duplicated conceptual symbols which reveal a sense of simplicity within complications. The sculptures of Cheung Yee are in line with this spirit too. This type of carvings is a varied combination made up by simple symbolic bold lines which appears as the form of tortoise, spindle holes, square and circle, worm and dragon etc. Most of the time Cheung Yee adds shell-like, porous balls between the slits in order to increase the effects of the parts.
