Condition

The canvas is in good original condition. There are a few infrequent small areas of craquelure, particularly in the upper right quadrant, and some indentations to the paint surface along the right edge which appear inherent to the work. Otherwise the surface appears to be in good overall condition. Examination under ultra-violet light reveals scattered areas of retouching, particularly along the edges and in the lower right quadrant. Held in a simple black rectlinear frame. Catalogue Note

The title of this work is drawn from Dylan Thomas' 1934 poem The Force That Through the Green Fuse Drives the Flower. Richards was a great admirer of Thomas' writing and in 1965 had also produced a suite of Twelve Lithographs for Six Poems of Dylan Thomas.
