A KPM PORCELAIN RECTANGULAR PLAQUE LATE 19TH CENTURY

signed Wagner, Wein, finely painted after Defregger with Tyrolean peasants, inscribed on the reverse Der Lietherspieler. n. F Defregger, with a carved wood frame, impressed sceptre over K.P.M, pseudo shield mark painted in blue and incised 15 - 12. 2 pieces.

There is a very minor 1-mm scratch to the enamel in the upper left hand corner; a very minor 3-mm scratch near the top edge at the left; and a very minor 2-mm scratch near the bottom edge on the right. Otherwise in good condition.

Franz von Derfregger (1835-1921) worked as a wood carver before turning to oil painting in 1860 when he began a year's study at the Munich Akademie. He was in Paris from 1863 to 1864, returning afterwards to Munich where he joined the studio of Karl Theodor von Piloty, working there until 1870.  The subject of the present plaque is taken directly from Defregger's Playing the Harp in the Mountain Hut, presently in the collection of the National Gallery of Slovenia, Ljubljana.
