Catalogue Note

The spectacular fjord scene shown in the present work is an excellent example of romantic Norwegian landscape painting, with its pastoral idyll on the left juxtaposed with the awe-inspiring, craggy cliffs on the right. After studying under Johannes Flintoe at the Royal School of Drawing in Kristiania between 1843-1846, Eckersberg travelled to Düsseldorf to study under J. W. Schirmer and his fellow countryman Hans Gude.
