Catalogue Note

Painted in 1931, the present work depicts the flooding of the Tisza River in Szolnok, capital of the county of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok in central Hungary.

Most famous for his monumental frescoes and church murals, Aba-Novák is considered one of the most original figures in Hungarian modernism. Common subjects in his early works include circuses, village fairs and markets, all rendered through expressive brushwork and vibrant colours.
