Condition

Original canvas. There are a few scattered spots of retouching visible under ultraviolet light, notably to the upper left corner and to two horizontal, parallel lines of scattered minor paint loss at the centre. Apart from pinholes to the upper left corner and two minor tears (approx. 0.4cm.) to the extreme upper and lower corners, this work is in good condition, with a strong surface and rich, bright colours, and ready to hang. Held in a decorative, muted gold-painted moulded plaster and wood frame.

Painted in 1855, the present work relates to an oil on panel of similar dimensions by Chassériau, painted in 1856 (Marc Sandoz, Théodore Chassériau, Paris, 1974, p. 220, no. 108, illustrated).
