Catalogue Note

In the 19th century, Andreas Schelfhout was one of the very few Dutch artists who mastered the technique of the pastel to a high degree. As the present lot shows well, the qualities of the pastel technique enabled Schelfhout to expand his much praised technique of free touches. This pastel, depicting numerous figures at refreshment stands, is an undisputed highlight in the artist's oeuvre.
